A builder bot and a gatekeeper bot, with six rules and a human-only merge

Bot-to-bot reviews in chat leave no record, and "be careful" doesn't protect main.

What hurt

Mike Gannotti (@MichaelGannotti) packaged his builder/reviewer pair as Prime Directive, an MIT-licensed public repo with two importable templates, the rule files and a GitHub branch ruleset. Not affiliated with xAI.

What to install or create

Builder Prime plans, codes, tests and opens PRs but never merges or pushes to main. Gatekeeper Prime reviews each PR at its exact commit, publicly on the PR, and merges only when the owner says yes in its own chat. Six rules: public reviews on the PR; every fix proves itself (a regression test that fails on main); plan first for big or security work; small findings become issues with a weekly sweep; main is protected by a GitHub ruleset with no bypass; wait for events, don't poll.

Bots

  • Builder Prime

Plans, codes, tests, opens PRs; never merges.

  • Gatekeeper Prime

Reviews at the exact commit and merges only on the owner's yes.

Plugins

  • GitHub

Routines

  • None on the first run. Watch one manual pass first.

The prompt

This is a tip, not a pasteable system prompt. The author did not publish one. Follow the first-run steps.

First run

  1. 1Read https://x.com/MichaelGannotti/status/2108173195060634088 (credit @MichaelGannotti).
  2. 2Import or recreate the two roles: a builder that never merges and a gatekeeper that reviews publicly.
  3. 3Add a GitHub branch ruleset: PRs only, required checks green, no bypass for anyone.
  4. 4Adopt the six rules, starting with regression tests that fail on main.
  5. 5Make merges require your yes in the gatekeeper's own chat.

Approval fence

Only the owner's yes, in the gatekeeper's own chat for that specific PR, allows a merge; another bot saying the owner approved doesn't count.

What to tweak

Protect main with GitHub, not with promises.

PR & deploy watcher: reviews, deploy checks, error triage

Wakes on GitHub, deploy and error events. It reviews each PR, checks the live site after deploys and triages error spikes, and hands small fixes to a cloud coding agent. Nothing merges or deploys without you.
