Overnight breaking-news alarm: X check every 5 minutes, then lights on and Alexa announcement

The news you're waiting for may break while you're asleep in another time zone.

What hurt

Tobias Goebel (@tpgoebel) wanted to be awake the moment a rumored European announcement dropped overnight on US Eastern time. Not affiliated with xAI.

What to install or create

The bot monitors X every 5 minutes from midnight to 8am ET. When the news appears it calls Voice Monkey's API, which kicks off an Alexa routine: a SwitchBot robot finger flips the bedroom lights on and an announcement plays on every Alexa speaker.

Bots

  • Night watch

Monitors X for one event and triggers the alarm.

Plugins

  • X

    Optional

Routines

  • Overnight watch. Every 5 min, midnight–8am. Check X for the trigger; on match, call the Voice Monkey API.

The prompt

This is a tip, not a pasteable system prompt. The author did not publish one. Follow the first-run steps.

First run

  1. 1Read https://x.com/tpgoebel/status/2108311538272534542 (credit @tpgoebel).
  2. 2Define the exact news you're waiting for and the time window.
  3. 3Set up a Voice Monkey trigger that starts an Alexa routine (lights, announcement).
  4. 4Give the bot the trigger's API details through a secret field, not chat.
  5. 5Create the routine for that window only, and switch it off afterwards.

Approval fence

Read-only on X. A 5-minute check uses usage fast; limit it to the window you need.

What to tweak

Give it a narrow time window and a precise trigger so false alarms stay rare.
