Personal
No laptop needed: Bambu Studio on the bot's computer, Tailscale to the home printer
The 3D printer's slicer doesn't run on an iPad or iPhone.
What hurt
Thijs van Schadewijk (@tvanschadewijk) set this up for his 84-year-old dad, a lifelong maker who only has an iPad and iPhone and wants to print his own designs. Not affiliated with xAI.
What to install or create
A dedicated "3D" bot installed Bambu Studio on its virtual machine. Tailscale runs on the bot's computer and on an always-on Apple TV at his parents' home, so the bot can reach the printer on the local network. His dad designs with the bot and it handles printer config, slicing and the print job.

The prompt
This is a tip, not a pasteable system prompt. The author did not publish one. Follow the first-run steps.
First run
- 1Read https://x.com/tvanschadewijk/status/2108131879681421338 (credit @tvanschadewijk).
- 2Create a bot for the printer and ask it to install the slicer on its own computer.
- 3Put Tailscale on the bot's computer and an always-on device on the printer's network.
- 4Have it confirm it can see the printer, then slice a small test print.
- 5Ask it to confirm the file and settings before every print.
Approval fence
Starting a print uses material and a hot machine; have it confirm the file and settings before each print.
What to tweak
Let the bot learn the tooling so the maker can focus on making.
